Roger Moore, McClatchy-Tribune News Service
"Project X" is that beau who sets off warning bells when he's there to date your little girl. You won't want to let her out the door with this creep.
-
Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune
This is a film desperately in need of a McLovin. Also, jokes would help. And comedic chemistry between the actors. And an ending that isn't a bolted-on cop-out. Save yourselves. It's too late for me.
-
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
The movie has all the heft of a tweet, but Philips has made it look pimp and, until the police end the party, Project X really is a riot.
-
James Berardinelli, ReelViews
Ultimately, Project X is an example of why gimmicks rarely work, especially once the new shine has worn off.
-
Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times
"Project X" bears a cravenly piggish attitude toward rewarding socially unacceptable behavior that feels unseemly rather than exciting, so-what rather than so-funny and obvious instead of new.
-
Melissa Anderson, Village Voice
"There's a midget in the oven!" is about as inspired as the dialogue and set pieces get in this queasy-making entertainment about a 17-year-old dude's birthday bacchanalia.
-
Brian Gibson, Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Canada)
Laughs? Just one or two chuckles. Acting? Pretty flat. X stands for Xcuse to shrug off empty-spectacle moviemaking as awesome partying for Hollywood's coveted teen demographic. X marks that Xtremely cynical profiteering spot atop the box office.

Rob Gonsalves, eFilmCritic.com
Except for bits concerning the dog, I didn't hear myself laughing.
-
Simon Weaving, Screenwize
If you don't mind the adolescent male point-of view (read: constant objectifying of the opposite sex) there's plenty to enjoy here.
-
Jeff Bayer, The Scorecard Review
The party won't stop, even though you want it to.
-
Sean Means, Salt Lake Tribune
Overloaded with foul language, gratuitous nudity, obnoxious characters, and the sub-standard cinematography of the "found footage" style.... But damn if it's not entertaining.
-
Robert Denerstein, Movie Habit
A bad-taste comedy with energy and anarchy to spare -- maybe too much of both
-
Donald Clarke, Irish Times
An unhealthy strain of misogyny runs through the dialogue, and the film- makers' unquestioning acceptance of high-school one-upmanship fairly turns the stomach.
-
John Beifuss, Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)
Although much of this obvious yet ingenious film is filler, it may be a game-changer in its genre, and its fiery, almost apocalyptic final act recalls the liberating anarchy of the great 'Rock 'n' Roll High School.'
-
Jim Lane, Sacramento News & Review
... a lame, laughless, pathetic little comedy.
-
Dan Lybarger, KC Active
'Project X' is probably the most persuasive argument for retiring the 'found footage' genre.
-
Todd Jorgenson, Cinemalogue.com
The film's clumsy attempts to give its characters some emotional depth feel tacked-on and disingenuous.
-
Tony Medley, tonymedley.com
...substituting crudity and shock value for intelligence and wit, this seems to encourage impressionable youth to engage in deplorable behavior.
-
Graham Young, Birmingham Mail
( ... ) puts the X firmly into eXcess.
-
Cameron Williams, The Popcorn Junkie
4:30pm 1 March 2012, the time a I saw the film industry and possibly humankind, hit a brand new low with Project X. A film so bad it doesn't deserve to be called a film or be allowed a release anywhere inside our solar system - including Pluto.

To simply call this alleged comedy stupid is just a massively unforgivable understatement. Project X is unbelieveably moronic and revoltingly cruel and lacking in any traces of soul, heart or humour. It's a film that has tons of raunchiness but depressingly none of it is actually funny and resultingly extremely dislikable. It has a lot of repugnant characters, it's completely un-original and just bored me to death. I laughed 3 times and that's definetely not enough. It's a mean spirited, badly filmed, cheap, materialistic and above all ugly film that bares no comedic resemblance to other films like it such as Superbad and more appropriately The Hangover. It's rubbish. -

How could i give this movie a 9 out of 10? Well because it succeeds in exactly what it tries to do and creates a classic high school party movie. From the very first scene it starts out funny and keeps going. This is essentially a movie about a giant party. And the party itself is wild, with a great soundtrack. The movie just keeps escalating throughout getting crazier and crazier. While this may not be realistic, it does enough of a job to stay somewhat grounded while managing to escalate the antics of the teens to insane heights. The characters are hilarious and carry the movie. This is just pure entertainment, never slowing down for more then a minute or without throwing in a laugh. Again if the plot doesn't appeal to you then you wont like the movie, there's no way around it. that being said this will join the ranks of classic high school party movies. No this isnt a John Hughes movie, there's no lesson or even a real coming of age story, this is just a wild, funny party, and its entertaining for the full running time. For what it attempts to be Project X hits on every mark, and its hard not to remember this one. -

This is a successful use of the found footage type of film making in so much as they do a really good job of letting the audience see everything. The downside is that it really turns into a mash up of music videos you would expect to see on some grunge bands website showing how cool it is to be young and how drinking, sex, and drugs are awesome. While fun I think the flick is promoting a lifestyle to youth that is unrealistic and dangerous. -

Another movie this year misusing the trite (and unnecessary) found footage gimmick edited from multiple cameras (even under the water!), which would have been impossible to obtain. But those looking for just pointless, forgettable fun are likely to be entertained. -

"Project X" is a pretty original and simple movie. It's a handheld movie about the craziest high school party ever. That's the premise and storyline in a nutshell. The cast is all unknowns, which makes it feel very authentic. The laughs are spread throughout, and don't always hit. But there are more hits than misses. The party is pretty insane, from dogs flying with balloons to a midget put into an oven. A lot of crazy stuff happens. At around 85 minutes, the movie has a great pace and never overstays it's welcome. There are a couple of issues that hold the movie back from being a classic. First the ending of the party probably could have been handled better, as it felt rushed and kind of out of place. The second is the characters aren't fully developed so that you really care what happens to them, but that really isn't this type of movie. All in all, it's ok for a watch, if your into high school partying shenanigans. Otherwise, stay away and remove the stick from your butt. -

You want a crazy party movie? Heres your crazy party movie! Ya know, I didn't think I would enjoy this movie when I first saw the trailer. But after watching it I must say that it was insane. Theres nothing nice or kindhearted about this movie, it just feels real. Though it really could have done without the montages. Where it fails is that its not that funny, there are some humorous parts, but they are far apart. Overall its a crazy experience that should be viewed with a ton of people. It's no "Chronicle" and is really only good for one viewing, but its a crazy time that really should be experienced -

I've seen 'Project X' twice now, and I still don't know what to make of it. This review is not totally accurate, because you're either going to like this movie or completely hate it. I seem to be caught in the middle. On one hand, i found it extremely entertaining, I laughed quite a bit, and really enjoyed the soundtrack and montage of party clips. On the other hand, the acting was pretty bad, the script was mostly lacking in any legitimate dialogue, and a lot of it felt more like a music video instead of a feature film. The build up to the party is a little slow with A LOT A LOT of Costa...its up to you to decide if that's a bad things or not. I think teens are gonna like it, I think parents are going to hate it. My advice is to see it, and decide for yourself. -

To be honest, its only for teenagers or people with an open mind. The music is awesome but only for a younger demographic. I won't go so far to say that the movie is good but ill say that its really entertaining with its beautiful woman and crazy stunts. -

If you want to see a director on ecstasy trying to re-create "Superbad," then "Project X" is the movie for you. As three nerdy high school seniors want to throw a party for their friends birthday after his parents leave, they go to drastic measures to get the whole town invited. As you would guess, everyone shows up, and it becomes the party of the century. It is hilarious, stupid, crude, rude, and completely over-the-top, but it is one hell of a fun time. "Project X" is a teenagers dream and a parents' nightmare. As straight forward as the movie is, the comedy is consistent and the conclusion is far bigger then what you would normally expect. Like the reviews are stating, "if you are between the ages of 18 and 25, you will love this film." I must agree. It is stuff that has been seen many times before, but it is done so cool that it almost feels new. I want to slap myself for saying this, but I would definitely watch this again. It was an awesome theatrical experience, as the sold out show clapped and cheered after every insane moment. "Project X" is the ultimate party movie, even if it's stupid! -

"Project X" was a fun movie. Of course, this isn't for everybody. It features the raunchy, inappropriate, mean-spirited, and sarcastic humor that normally has me laughing my ass off. The majority of the laughs are derived from the dialogue, but the film does escalate the unoriginal teen party theme. "Project X" isn't without it's flaws. There is far too much filler. Too much time is spent watching people have a good time, while subjecting the viewer to annoying modern music. I guess it's like having shitty music videos intertwined throughout a movie. "Project X" is also another "found-footage" movie. The style of direction was unnecessary. In the end, "Project X" was good for some laughs. Nothing less, nothing more. -

Thomas: This is way more than 50 people. Costa: Of course it is; it's plus one. I tend to dislike the reviews where I feel like I have to write about the qualifiers needed to justify where I am coming from on certain films. Project X, for example, is a film that is seemingly designed to be enjoyed by the teenage boy crowd, despite being an incredibly hard-R rated film full of debauchery throughout (that description would have saved space for the poster and the MPAA, by the way). I can say I went in open-minded, as, behind the scenes, there are a number of people involved that made this project more intriguing to me. Coming out of it, beyond a few chuckles here and there, there is not really much for me to recommend to the paying movie-going public that couldn't be found in other, better films or on the internet for other...obvious reasons. Take away the gimmick of making this a 'found footage' film and all you have is an unoriginal, tepid, and fairly mean-spirited film that provides plenty in the way of raunchiness, but not much else. read the whole review at thecodeiszeek.com -

Tale of two movies: An unbearably annoying, mean-spirited build-up combined with a second half that has a few cool over-the-top moments, but even those are still brought down by the annoying nature that highlights the first half. -

couple good moments at the very end, but its just overall a pretty average movie, probably only applauded by those under the age of 18. -

Project X is a movie I could tell what was going to happen after the first 10 minutes or so, it was just going to be about some quirky guys who throw a party to be popular. This has been done before, it is a boring premise by know, and these unknown actors do not give it a new spin or make it feel original in any way. Itâ(TM)s just a movie that lasts about 90 minutes and bored me to death, you may have thought this film was funny and had a great time, but as for me I felt it has been done before and a movie that only has drug and sex jokes does not entertain me. Sometimes simple comedies are the best ones, but here itâ(TM)s not only simple, but after they tell us there is going to be a party, at the actual party nothing happens but a series of weird events that make problems for the main three protagonists. This is the kind of party every person wants to go to, but itâ(TM)s not a party that I want to sit and watch for a very short runtime. The story follows three teens, Thomas (Thomas Mann), Costa (Oliver Cooper), and J.B. (Jonathon Brown) who throw a party at Thomas's house for his birthday. They hope to throw a huge party to increase their popularity at school, but they have no idea how to invite people since they are nerds. They are able to spread the word and make a great party, but things may get out of control when this party becomes a sick twisted series of screwed up circumstances. The plot is so idiotic and simple that it seems like it was made completely for teenaged boys who just dream of getting laid. This movie is profane when it doesn't have to be, and uses the f-word about 175 times and soon I could tell they were just going for a movie to be as mean and unlikable as possible. Itâ(TM)s not a horrible thing to be profane, it does not bother me, but you could tell they only added it so much in this movie to try to express how much they wanted to make it for a teenaged audience. I would be lying if I said I never laughed, but whenever I did laugh it was something that was so stupid you cannot help but give a laugh. I was not engaged in a story, because there was no story, and I knew from the start where this film would end up and I guess this film was just not for me. The ensemble cast is a bunch of unknown young adults, much like the film Chronicle, but unlike that film this movie has not picked a good group of actors. Thomas Mann is a quirky loser who just spends half the movie whining about the party, so I did not enjoy him. Oliver Cooper is just some profane guy trying to pull off a Jonah Hill voice and a "I'm so cool" attitude, and that is why they try so hard to make him funny that he ends up just being annoying. Jonathon Brown is just here for fat jokes, that is it and that is all I can say of him. There are hundreds of people at this party, and yet we are able to only see these three nerds try to be cool during it. Project X could have been something great possibly, if they had given it more interesting and cooler characters and less sex and drugs jokes, it could have been something decent or more. But sadly it fails on most level other than giving me some decent laughs even though I felt guilty about it. For me a comedy needs more than jokes to be good, I want to have fun with the story as well and have some memories. True I would have loved to be at a party like this, but itâ(TM)s just not as fun watching it through the eyes of guys as awkward and quirky as this. It just didn't feel like it lived up to what it could have been and that whole found footage stuff is kind of getting overdone and needs to take a second to breathe. If you enjoy jokes trying to entertain only the younger generation with jokes about ecstasy and genitals, go see this, but if you enjoy good comedies like me, I say don't go see this. -

Xplosive, Xplicit and riotously Xuberant, "Project X" invites us to attend an absolutely anarchical party overflowing with nearly all teen mind`s most crazed dreams all blown amusingly out of imaginative proportion, but thankfully, without holding us responsible for the incurred havoc. It begins when a close group of high school friends, ranked rather poorly on the scale of social fame, establishes that it will project itself toward the acme of coolness by means of hosting the wildest birthday party possible. With a few comical mishaps along the way, the film reaches its long-awaited climax quickly: the party itself. From here on, "Project X" begins to redefine the common standards of teenage festivities, even in the cinematographic world. One ludicrous feat after another, the climaxing point consistently escalates and guarantees an epic final half for the film. With flying dogs, free-falling teens, sinking cars, flame-throwing lunatics and much, much more, "Project X" is evidently more than well-equipped to thoroughly entertain the audience. After all of the intense uproar subsides and fires are extinguished, there seems to prevail some consensus between the hosts, those who attended and those who watched- a bittersweet feeling within whispers that the destruction brought on by the party was not entirely in vain. -

Despite a clandestine set-up that teases moviegoers with Fast Times, some Risky Business, at least one Pick-Up Artist, and slightly more than Sixteen Candles, Project X ultimately becomes a tale of 12th grade nothingness. True, the pedigree and premise held some laughriot potential, however sophomoric. A Hard-R documentary-style teen comedy about an out-of-control soirée produced by the director of Old School and The Hangover? A Projected X-ceptional comedy! What audiences get, however, is a busted-up garden party. When the movie's stocked with clichéd characters and hi-jinks pulled from a decade's worth of other teen movies, not even a unique spin can get this comedy off of the hook. In this R-rated documentary-style raunchy comedy, three anonymous high school seniors (Cooper, Brown, Dax Flame) try to make a name for themselves by throwing a birthday party that no one will forget...but word of mouth turns their get together into an epic blow-out beyond their control. Writer/director Todd Phillips gave moviegoers some of the funniest comedies of the last decade. Here, however, he's just balancing the checkbook and signing off on the - ahem - talent. So, he presents an anti-climactic found footage flick with potty mouth jokes audiences already seen and heard a hundred times before in better movies. Yes, there are bedlam and boobs, but what's at stake for the paper-thin protagonists? Certainly not sympathy. With a little more scripted wit and spit, this outing could've been a celebration. Instead, it's just sex, vomit, and drug jokes that were partied out long before this flick even hit screens. Bottom line: X marks the rot. -

Some people are calling this "the best party movie ever made", and it's certainly advertising itself like it. But does Project X stand firm with its early consensus? One thing about the film is that it does not seem like a film and more so like an experience; you actually have the feeling that you are at that party. Plus, it does so many things wrong to call itself a "film". For one, you never really care about the characters, you never learn about them, and you never seem to find them important. Another thing is that the film itself seems too vulgar, and this vulgarity is used in the most unfunny fashion. Plus, a lot of this film can be compared to the far superior film Superbad, in more ways than one. Overall, if you are not the target demographic, being the high school/college crowd, steer clear. But if you are, this is worth checking out, but just remember, anything this film does Superbad did it better. -

Critics were way to harsh on this movie, Project X totally succeeds in being what it is, and that is a BIG, LOUD TEENAGE PARTY MOVIE! Dont expect it to be smart, just expect it to be funny, and it is funny, in fact, hilarious! This movie was just great in its theme, its idea, and its style of real hard partying. The thing about Project X is that nobody experiences something like this, it is beyond fun, particularly the hot girls are sexy, and lough-out-loud. And believe it or not, there is also heart in the film underneath all the craziness in the film. Critics, this movie is not made for you, but its made for teens and adults who still like to party, so I recommend this film for anyone who is interested in party movies.
